Stampede at Elphinstone Railway station Mumbai!!

At least 22 people were killed and total 39 people injured in a stampede at Elphinstone railway station’s foot over bridge.

Stampede occurred when a heavy rain shower came and people looked to take roof of the shed of Foot over bridge and rumors did the rest of the harm.

Why crowd swelled on foot-over-bridge at Elphinstone station?

The heavy rain spell witnessed in many parts of Mumbai city today morning was one of the reasons why crowds swelled on the foot over bridge at Elphinstone station, leading to tragic stampede which resulted in 22 deaths.

MR Piyush Goel said:

  • Will bear costs for the injured people; grievously injured to get Rs 1 lakh, minor injured to get Rs 50,000 ex gratia.
  • Ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to be given by the state government and Rs 5 lakh by the Railways to the families of the deceased people.

In India we are familiar to only on system of trains that is a locomotive leading the coaches (I say it as  leading power system ). This system is neither safe,fast nor efficient.
